How it Works
Your Vision
The process begins with us discussing your vision for your piece. We then decide on clothing and pose that conveys the emotion and energy we want to show through to the final piece. Now we’re ready to begin to work directly in Oil Paints, Alla Prima (Wet on Wet) A technique of painting wet oil paint into wet paint without letting the previous layers fully dry. This is my favorite way to paint as I prefer the flexibility of wet paint and feel it maintains the movement of the initial pose and allows the final piece to feel less static and labored.
The Process
Now we begin to lay out the entire pose and composition of the scene. We continue with working on the most important features first such as the head and face. My focus at this point is working quickly to get color and values down to see how the piece will start to look moving forward before we’ve committed to anything too heavily and adjust as necessary. This all happens within the initial sitting for the portrait. If further sittings are required we’ll discuss and schedule them accordingly though usually one session of sitting is enough.
Final Painting
Working quickly to keep things feeling fresh full of momentum and energy we work til the piece is complete all working Alla Prima or (wet on wet). Finally once the painting is complete a photo of the final is sent to the client to “OK” the final piece. Once the painting has dried after a few weeks it’ll be signed and sent to the client to enjoy your custom one of a kind timeless portrait painting.
